- First-time vs recertification
- First-time covers building the system and getting certified. Recertification is the ongoing cost once you already hold the certificate, including surveillance audits and the year-three renewal.
- Company size
- Headcount is the biggest driver of audit length. More employees means more audit days, which raises the cost.
- Process maturity
- If you already document how you work, there is less to build, so implementation costs less. Starting from scratch costs the most.
- How you will do the work
- Consultant-led is faster but adds fees. In-house is cheaper in cash but uses far more of your team's time. "Some outside help" sits in between.
- Extra sites
- Each additional location adds audit time and implementation effort, because auditors need to see how the system works across the business.
- Implementation (total)
- The people cost of building the management system: consultant fees plus your own staff's time. This is usually the largest line.
- Initial certification audit
- What the certification body charges for the stage 1 and stage 2 audits to issue your certificate. Driven by audit days and the standard's complexity.
- Surveillance audit (per year)
- A shorter check each year to confirm you are keeping the system running. A recurring cost for the life of the certificate.
- Recertification audit (year 3)
- The renewal audit at the end of the three-year cycle. Lighter than the first certification, heavier than a surveillance visit.
- 3-year cost of ownership
- The realistic total across a full three-year cycle, not just year one. This is the number to budget against.
