What ISO 22000 is

ISO 22000 is the international standard for food safety management. It combines good practices with HACCP, the hazard-analysis method used across the food industry, so hazards are controlled from ingredients to shipping.

In the US it aligns closely with FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) thinking. Many buyers, however, ask specifically for GFSI-recognized schemes such as FSSC 22000, which is built on ISO 22000, so check which one your customers require.

The standard suits any link in the food chain, from farms and processors to packaging and logistics.

How to get certified

  1. Map your food safety hazards using HACCP principles.
  2. Set prerequisite programs: hygiene, pest control, cleaning and supplier control.
  3. Build the management system and align it with FDA FSMA duties.
  4. Run it, gather records, and complete an internal audit and management review.
  5. Choose a certification body, and confirm whether customers need ISO 22000 or FSSC 22000.
  6. Pass the audits and maintain through surveillance.

Always use an accredited certification body

In the US, look for a body accredited by ANAB. An accredited certificate is the one customers, regulators and buyers actually trust — and you can confirm any certificate through IAF CertSearch.

How much ISO 22000 costs

Ask your customers which certificate they accept before you buy. Getting the wrong scheme is an expensive mistake.

Facility hygiene upgrades, if needed, are separate from the certification cost.

Multiple production lines or sites add audit days and cost.
